04.15.01 :: Drum and Bass
These are many of Bruce's favorite Drum and Bass tunes from past and present. Focusing on what he calls "sharp sounds" listen for the kicks, snares, and hats... I think he is an 808 fanatic. Just don't tell him I said so.

1 :: Blito - 'Nite Cap' (Stamina (STM001)) 1998
A classic tune (his best tune?) from Swedish producer Blito. Nite Cap is a soulful funky use of classic 808 sounds. He recently teamed up with Alaska for an Apocoliptik release. Combined Forces(001).

2 :: Justice & Neil Trix - 'Transmute' (Hardleaders (HL47)) 2000
Great distorted 909 kit with atmospherics that don't bore. A somewhat experimental tune and certainly a unique release from the Hardleaders imprint.

3 :: Klute - 'Phone Call (Matrix Remix)' (Certificate 18 (cert1843)) 2000
12' single from Klute's 'Fear of the People' full length. Original is ALMOST as good as this remix. You can hear strains of Nasty Habits - 'Liquid Fingers (Goldie Remix)' which Matrix coproduced. Slower than your average dnb tune. Fantastic vocal work, from... ?

4 :: Nasty Habits - 'Liquid Fingers (Goldie Remix)' (31 Records (31R013)) 2001
Features additional production by Matrix. Does Goldie ever work alone? After 'Saturn Returnz' and the very mediocre tune 'Inside the Shadow' with J Majik (on Nightvision (INFRA LP 002) it was starting to look like Goldie is falling off. Maybe not…

5 :: J Majik (Feat Cathy Brown) - 'Love Is Not A Game' (Defected Records) 2001
J Majik is another old drum and bass hero who I thought had started to go the wrong direction in the last few years, but with this tune and the phenomenally dark, twisted, and nasty 'Lizard' both released at the end of 2k I will continue to keep my eyes on him. This tune has a funk you rarely see in drum and bass anymore. Interesting. Funky. Buy it. Play it.

6 :: Kabuki - 'Centipede' (Southern Sessions (SOUTH007)) 1999
I originally heard this tune on the Precision Breakbeat Research - High Performance Showdown compilation and it immediately became a classic tune in my world. THE BEATS, outstanding intricate studer click shit that just moves both mechanically and methodically. Combine that with a new bassline and pads used in just the right places… whew! Dope. This tune is an all time favorite.

7 :: Boymerang - 'Secret Life' from 'Balance of the Force' 1997
This is it. This is drum and bass for me. Blending scifi mystery with the right doses of atmospherics and mechanics, make this entire album is on point. Granted it isn't all dance floor material (which is definately not a bad thing) but it has longevity, and more importantly emotion. 'Secret Life' is the only downtempo tune on this album, and I want more like this. Haven't heard from Boymerang since his '97 releases on Prototype and the '98 Leaf Classic Plant Compilation. He is due for another release… HURRY UP.
