| 1 :: J-Live
- 'Them That's Not'
from 'The Best Part'
2000 |
|
 |
| Them That’s Not is one hard to find J-Live tune. This album has never seen a proper release. When the small label he signed to purchased by Universal, they decided not to spend any money on its release. Luckily illegal vinyl prints have shown up in a few shops. This solid cut feature super J lyrics with an unusual rising tempo and flow that speeds up until the main drop steady it out. Good Stuff! |

| 2 :: Pete Rock
- 'Play Dis Only At Night'
from 'Petestrumentals'
(BBE)
2001 |
|
 |
| Classic NEW Pete Rock here, a funky and fabulous instrumental from his brilliant BBE release. The first in a series of albums on UK label BBE called “The Beat Generation” it highlight some of hip hop undergrounds elite producers. The best thing about the series besides the all-star producers it feature is they are largely instrumentals unobscured by MC lyric. Stressing the more musical side of hip hop future releases include MaW, Spinna, Marley Marl, and some I am really sitting by post for: Jazzy Jeff, and Vikter Duplaix. Albums from Jay Dee and Will.I.Am have already release. Excellent record. Excellent Series. Play Dis Only At Night is straight jazzy chill hip hop from the underappreciated master Pete Rock.

| 3 :: Da Grassroots feat. Mr. Roam
- 'Price of Livin'
from 'Superrappin'
(Emerging Records)
1999 |
|
 |
| Canadian natives Da Grassroots represent on this compilation. Fatski, Arcee, and Schism deliver smooth lyrics and production. |

| 4 :: The Roots feat. Jaguar
- 'What You Want'
from 'The Roots Come Alive'
(MCA Records)
1999 |
|
 |
| A very hype dope track from The Roots, featured on their live tour album. With signature Roots Rhodes keys from Kamal and bass/horn stabs that compliment the great vocal hook provided by Jaguar laying on top of Black Thoughts lyrics. He delivers such an emotional fiery rap on this one you think the story he tells might be true.

| 5 :: Choclair feat. Saukrates
- 'Rubbin'
from 'Ice Cold'
(Priority Records)
2000 |
|
 |
| The best track from Choclair’s debut full length. He is joined by fellow canadian Saukrates on this one. The first Canadian signed onto a major American label (Virgin's Priority Records) Choclair as well as Saukrates and Da Grassroots have helped Canada become recognized as a bergouning source of great Hip Hop. Great lyrical hook. Dope horny beats produced by the equally talented MC/Producer Saukrates. Tight. |

| 6 :: Busta Rhymes
- 'Get High Tonight'
from 'When Disaster Strikes'
(Elektra)
1997 |
|
 |
| Busta comes at this one with a ill hook and bouncing party vibe. His flow on Get High Tonight plays the middle ground between his earlier less staccato flow from the Leaders of the New School era and his more recent efforts on ELE and Anarchy. On When Disaster Strikes, his second solo effort, DJ Scratch provides most of production. Great original rework of the uptempo KC and the Sunshine Band classic Get Down Tonight.

| 7 :: Bahamadia
- 'UKNOWHOWWEDU'
from 'Kollage'
(EMI)
1999 |
|
 |
| Another fantastic hook based track this time from one of Phillidelphia's best (my favorite) female MCs.

| 8 :: The Pharcyde
- 'She Said (Jay Dee Remix)'
from 'She Said (12")'
1996 |
|
 |
| Originally released in 1996 Jay Dee does the remix treatment on this tune from The Pharcyde giving it a big boost and infusing a stronger rnb flavor.

| 9 :: Da Beatminerz feat. Caron Wheeler
- 'Open'
from 'Brace 4 Impak'
(Rawkus)
2001 |
|
 |
| Pete Rock on production again giving the Soul II Soul vocalist Caron Wheeler another chance to shine. Born in England, raised in Jamaica Caron is an artist not content to stay in one particular genre she has done work all over the spectrum with great result. Rawkus... |
